Where our snow data comes from.
SnoViz shows real-time snowfall for Colorado ski resorts. Accuracy matters to us as much as it matters to skiers deciding whether to drive up I-70. This page explains what we collect, how we get it, and how resort operators can partner with us or opt out.
What we collect
For each of the 15 resorts we track, we retrieve the public snow-report page and extract these fields:
- Past 24hr / 48hr / 72hr snowfall (in inches)
- Base depth
- Season-to-date total (when published)
- The timestamp the resort attached to its own report
We do not scrape lift status, trail conditions, terrain-park detail, pricing, marketing copy, images, or any personal data. Only the snow-condition figures the resort publishes on its own snow-report page.
How often
Our cron job runs every two hours. Each resort receives at most one request per hour from us — well below the traffic a single skier would generate refreshing the page manually. Every request is identified by our User-Agent: SnoViz/1.0 (Colorado ski deals; https://snoviz.com; contact@snoviz.com) so operators can see and contact us in their logs.
We respect robots.txt. If a resort disallows crawling of its snow-report path we skip that resort and fall back to a weather-model estimate instead.
Legal basis
The snow-report pages we access are publicly available — no login, no paywall, no terms-of-service click-through. We use the data transformatively: our dashboard combines conditions across all 15 Colorado resorts so skiers can compare in one place, something no individual resort site does. Every scraped value on our site links back to the resort's own snow-report page so we drive traffic to, not away from, the source. We do not republish reports verbatim.
SnoViz is an independent publisher and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any resort we cover.
Opt-out
If you are a resort operator and would like SnoViz to stop scraping your snow-report page, email us at contact@snoviz.com. We will disable the scraper for your resort within one business day and swap in weather-model data as a fallback. There is no cost or paperwork.
Direct data feeds
Would you rather send us data directly instead of us scraping? We can consume any format your team already produces — JSON feed, CSV drop, webhook, whatever's easy. A direct feed removes our load on your site, gives you full control over the numbers we show, and lets us surface richer details (lift status, terrain-park updates, grooming reports). Fallback data sources
When a resort scraper is unavailable, we fall back in order to:
- OpenMeteo — a gridded weather model. Free, public, and ideal for coverage but tends to under-report individual storms compared to a physical snow stake.
- USDA NRCS SNOTEL — federal snow-telemetry stations. Physical snow-depth measurements, updated daily.
Every row on our snow dashboard is tagged with its data source so you can tell at a glance which numbers came from the resort's own snow report and which are our fallback estimate.
